Dies at 85

Samuel McKay, 85, died Tuesday at Mahaska hospital where he was admitted Sunday. The funeral will be this afternoon (Thursday) at 2 o'clock at the Whyle funeral chapel, with service by the Rev. Dwight C. Bonham of Keswick and Thornburg Methodist churches. Lee Coulon will be soloist, Mrs. Leslie Wilson organist. Burial will be at Sixteen cemetery.

Casket bearers will be Roy Fox, Joe Fry, Marvin Tish, Edgar Miller, Delmar McKay, and Delmar McKay, Jr.

Samuel, son of Samuel and Margaret Downey (sic)* McKay, was born January 31, 1876,** in Komoka, Ontario, Canada. He was one of a family of eight children all of whom have preceded him in death except a sister, Mrs. Margaret Lemmons, of Cambridge City, Indiana, and a brother, Robert McKay of Andulasia, Illinois.

December 15, 1896, he was married to Anna Jones at Davenport and they became the parents of three children. Florance Urissia died at the age of nine months.

Moving from Illinois to Iowa early in their married life, they bought a farm near Tilton. After the first world war they decided to retire and moved to Cedar Rapids for a few years but farming seemed to call him back and in 1922 he bought the farm where he has lived the rest of his life.

December 14, 1931, Mrs. Anna McKay died after a long illness.

Mr. McKay was a member of the Thornburg church; a member of the Masonic lo dge of Thornburg, and the Eastern Star lodge of What Cheer.

In November 1935 he was married to Mrs. Bula Ferguson and they lived at his country home where they farmed.

Surviving are his wife, Bula; his two daughters, Mrs. Luella McKay Zimmerman and Mrs. Adeline McKay Hicks; two grandchildren, Mrs. Arlene Dahlstrom of Thornburg and Sammy Kay Hicks of Waukegan, Illinois. There are three great grandchildren: Jon Stanley Dahlstrom of Cedar Rapids, Ardis Ann and Roger Samuel Dahlstrom of Thornburg. Surviving also besides his brother and sister, are two step-daughters, Mrs. Irene Denny of Oskaloosa and Mrs. Margaret Hutchins of Belle Plaine; several step-grandchildren and great grandchildren and other relatives.
