Mr. Jessie Box Jr., age 87 of Crockett, passed away Tuesday morning, September 7, 2010 at Methodist Sugarland Hospital in Houston with his three daughters at his bedside. Mr. Box was born February 9, 1923 in Crockett, he was the son of the late Jessie Sr. and Beatrice (Terry) Box. He was the proud graduate of Crockett Colored High School in 1947. Mr. Box enlisted in the United Stated Army July 3, 1942 where he acquired the nickname, "Hound-dog," because of in innate ability to identify and troubleshoot potential hazards. Corporal Box received honorable discharge in October 1945 from 3501st Quartermaster Truck Company. He was a Master Mechanic and Wrecker Service Drive for many years at King Motor Company in Crockett. Mr. Box began a law enforcement career as a Correctional Officer with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice in the late 1960's. He later received the Law Enforcement Officer Standards Certification from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement and served as a Police Officer with the Crockett Police Department until his retirement in the late 1970's. Among his favorite hobbies during retirement were custom accessorizing his Chevrolet pickup truck, collecting art, monitoring information on his Citizens Band radio, and watching westerns on television.

Survivors include his children Claudean Mathis, of Houston, Jesselyn Reese and spouse Billy, of Huntsville, and Jessica Woodson and spouse Jeffrey, of Houston; seven grandchildren Rodney Bennett, Rochelle Bennett, Andre Jackson, Deraunda Hyman, Miiko Rowley, James Fisher, Jr., and Jeremy Woodson; a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

Preceded in death by his two sisters Bernice Johnson and Florence Chatman; two brothers Henry Earl Box, and James Box; one grandson Obi Richardson; and one great-grandson Joseph Trent Jackson; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services were held Friday, September 10, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. in the Pruitt's Mortuary Chapel, 7518 North Main Street, Houston. Internment followed at the Houston Veterans Administration National Cemetery, 10410 Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 77038.
