"Mary Overton Steele was born in Bluff Springs, Texas to Gentry Overton, Sr. and Annie Terrell. She was the oldest of four children. After relocating to Austin at an early age, she accepted Christ as her personal Savior at the Jackson Chapel Methodist Church in the St. John Community.

She received her education in the Bluff Springs School System and the Austin School District. Mary had a raw talent in drawing and a love for fashions. After completing her education, she went on to work at the Brown School and First Baptist Church Child Care Center, where she developed her skills for caring and communicating with people. This led to a long career with the City of Austin as a Communication Specialist, until her retirement twenty years later.

At the age of twenty, Mary united with the St. James Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend E. M. Franklin. She was a faithful member of the Sanctuary/Mass Choir as well as a member of the Church for fifty-six years.

Mary married Deacon William C. Steele in 1968. In 1976 Deacon Steele announced his call to the gospel ministry and began preaching. They served as Pastor and Wife for more than twenty years. After his retirement as Pastor, they returned home to St. James.

Mary is preceded in death by both parents, husband, and sister, Brenda Underwood."
