"MRS. HAWES DIES

SAN LEANDRO, May 2. The funeral took place this afternoon of Mrs. Hannah Hawes, a member of one of the pioneer families of this county, who died at her home here yesterday morning. Services were held at an Oakland cemetery. Mrs. Hawes was 76 years of age and was the widow of A. T. Hawes. She was a daughter of the late Henderson Lewellyn, one of the early settlers in this part of the state. Surviving her are a daughter, Mrs. Charlotte E. Lynch, a member of the teaching staff of the San Leandro grammar school, two grandchildren and two siters. Mrs. Hawes had lived in this city for twenty years." END

The following bio was provided by Walt Luelling:
Hannah Eleanor Luelling was born on 26 Feb 1841 in Salem, Henry County, Iowa. She was the sixth of ten living children of William Henderson Lewelling [Henderson Luelling] and Jane Elizabeth Presnall. At age six Hannah traveled with her family from Salem, Iowa, to Oregon in a wagon train. In March 1851, at age 10, her mother, Elizabeth, died and her happy family life was disrupted. Hannah spent several years as a resident student at the Portland Academy and Female Seminary while most of her family moved to California. By 1857 Hannah was back with some of her family in California where she met and married Walter Wood in Alameda County. Hannah and Walter had one daughter [Hannah's only child] before their marriage ended in divorce. In 1860 Hannah married William J. Bradbury and they lived in the San Francisco Bay area until William died on 12 Nov 1876. Then Hannah lived for a time with her older sister, Hattie [Rachel], and her family in San Francisco.
At age 58 she married Col. A.P. Hawes in San Francisco in 1899. They moved to San Leandro, Alameda County, California, and Hannah lived there until she died on 01 May 1917 at age 76.

"UNUSUAL WEDDING AT ALTRURIA MONDAY.

An unusual wedding ceremony was performed at Burke's sanitarium at Altruria Monday night. Lying on what is believed to be his death bed, Alpheus Peter Haws, a resident of Berkeley, aged 81 years, was reunited in wedlock to his divorced wife, Hannah Eleanor Haws, aged 65. The couple trod life's pathway together for many years but five years ago were separated by the courts on petition. Chief Deputy County Clerk Lawrence A. Pressley and Rev. Leander Turney went to Altruria late Monday evening in response to a request that a marriage license be issued and a minister come prepared to perform the wedding service. Propped up in his bed Mr. Haws took the solemn vows with his former wife. The news of the wedding under such peculiar circumstances will come as a pleasing surprise to the friends of the couple in Berkeley and Oakland."
