Born in Chernivtsi. The Pustilnik men were all butchers, and carried on their profession even after many came to the United States. Chova's Hebrew name was Chava bat Kopil.

The Shlakmans arrived in the United States at the port of Tampa, Florida, after spending about a year in Havana. They arrived on the ship, "Cuba" on 14 February 1923.
