Melvern Miles, the son of Fred and Nellie Burt Miles, was born April 27, 1909 southeast of Holyoke on the family farm. He attended the Amity School and Holyoke High School, graduating in 1928. He started farming southeast of Holyoke.

On May 18, 1932 he was united in marriage to Sophia Oltjenbruns in Grant, Nebraska. They made their home on a farm southeast of Holyoke later farming in the Amherst community before moving to Haxtun in 1946. He worked for Reither Construction as a subcontractor in the construction of power lines for REA until 1954. Mr. Miles continued farming and worked as an accountant and did tax work as well as operating the Haxtun Credit Union and serving as secretary-treasurer of the West Phillips County Cemetery District for several years before retirement.

He was a past member of the Haxtun Commercial Club and the Gun Club. He was a member of the town board for six years.

Survivors include his wife Sophia Miles of Haxtun; son Marlin Miles and wife Louann of Denver; three daughters, Maxine Thomas of Tempe, Arizona, Virginia Miles of Denver and Shirley Thompson of Holyoke; a brother, L.B. Miles and wife Lucillle of Holyoke; a sister, Mae Forbes of Denver; five grandchildren, four great grandchildren; three step grandchildren; four step great grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Reta. Mr. Miles died Wednesday, January 15, 1986 at Havasu Regional Hospital in Lake Haasu City Arizona at the age of 76.

Funeral services were held Saturday, January 18, 1986 at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Haxtun with Rev. Don Sanders officiating, with burial following in the Haxtun Cemetery.
