In 1864 and 65 he was a senior partner of the firm of Belden & Van Buskirk, clothing merchants on North Salina. Later he became connected with Belden & Denison, contractors, which were involved with work on the canal at Oswego. He was also involved with the construction of the Corton reservoir for New York City.
In 1864 he married Gertrude Woolson, daughter of Gardner and Louise Clark Woolson. He was a 33rd degree Mason.
