MARBLEHEAD - John E. Catherwood, 81, of 33 Kenneth Road, an MBTA machinist 40 years until retiring in 1970, died Tuesday in Salem Hospital.
Born in Scotland, he lived 78 years in Marblehead. He graduated from Marblehead High School in 1937.
A World War II Navy veteran, he was a member and a past commander of the Marblehead Veterans of Foreign Wars post.
He is survived by a son, John E. Catherwood Jr. of Holland Patent, N.Y.; four daughters, Mrs. Anthony J. (Joan M.) Catanzano of Beverly, Mary Jane Snyder of Alexandria, Va., Mrs. German (Patricia C.) Reyes of Falls Church, Va., and Catherine C. Catherwood of Stratham, N.H.; three sisters, Rose Manning and Mary Cuffe, both of Marblehead, and Margaret Moran of Yarmouth; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was the son of the late Neil and Annie (Maguire) Catherwood.
A funeral at 9 a.m. Friday from the Eustis and Cornell Funeral Home will be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Our Lady Star of the Sea Church.
