Patriarch of the Sixth Oldest of Ten Early Crago/Craigo Families in America

This man's actual burial place is not certain, but he lived in Ellijay and this cemetery was operating at that time, so it seems to be a probable burial place. All of the Gilmer County, Georgia Craigo's seem to be descendants of this man.

We think we know the identities of four of his children by his wife Leah Wright -- they are William, Robert, Mary and Thomas. A fifth child by the name of Nancy McEntire shows up in the household in 1850. Her relationship is not clear. Likewise, there appears to be another older son in the household in 1830 and 1840 whose identity is unclear.

We believe this Thomas Craigo may be a son of a John Crago born about 1765, but this relationship has not been well-documented. DNA studies at Family Tree DNA to date have been inconclusive, and even the DNA profile of this Thomas Craigo is not yet clear. We have DNA results for two Craigo men who used to believe they descended from John Crago b abt 1765 -- but, their DNA does not match each other, nor do they match any other tested Crago or Craigo DNA as of September 2023. Any reader with additional information about Thomas and/or his parentage is encouraged to send a note to the contributor of this memorial. I will be happy to add that information.

Male Craigo descendants of this man are also encouraged to join the Crago/Craigo DNA study group. Please contact me if you want to know more about these studies.
