Richard Dotson's Revolutionary War pension application in 1833 contains the best information regarding Richard's life. At that time, Richard was 81 and a resident of Tyler county, Virginia, He said he was born on the 23rd day of October 1752 and that he had a record of his age. He said he was born in Frederick/Shenandoah County, Virginia and lived there there until he was about age 20 when he moved to Southwest Pennsylvania, then claimed by Virginia.
He said in 1774 he served in Dunmore's War and later as an Indian Spy under Captain John Minor in 1777, 1778 and 1779, "entering the service in the spring and leaving in the fall, making in all he served as an Indian Spy the term of eighteen months". He also testified that In 1785, after the the close of the Revolution, he returned to Shenandoah County, Virginia. After a few years there, he moved to Loudoun County, Virginia for about two years, then to Hampshire County, (West) Virginia ,for about six years and finally to Wood County, (West) Virginia where he purchased land in 1802.
Documentation of Richard Dotson's ancestors and the surnames of two of his wives has not been located. Richard's first wife was Mary is listed on son William's death certificate in Doddridge County. WV. Amelia and Naomi are listed as Richard's wives wives on deeds. Although we have no records showing the surnames for Mary or Amelia, Naomi Villers was the widow of George Gregg when she married Richard.
The known children of Richard are William 1776-1865, Emanuel 1781-1822, Nancy 1784-1850, James 1792-1869, Richard Jr 1793-1873, Elisha 1794-1871, Joseph 1796-1839, Zachariah 1798-1863, Ruth 1803-1853, Stacey 1804-1850, and Naomi 1816-1882.
On July 18, 1833 Richard began receiving his Revolutionary War pension. According to the June 1, 1840 census Richard Dotson was 88 and living with his son James Dotson. On April 17, 1847 a final pension payment of $30 covering the period from September 1846 to March 1847 was made suggesting that he died in 1847. He is buried in the Arnold Creek Cemetery on a private farm on Long Run Road near Greenwood, West Virginia.
