Margaretha, born in Nassau, Germany, in 1839, was orphaned at an early age. She was raised by relatives and went by the names of Mutch and Shumley during her school years. She was married 11 Dec. 1857 in a Ceremony performed by Justice Brown. They had a wedding ceremony also performed on 14 May 1862 in St. Henry by Catholic Priest, Rev P. Maly, rector at New Prague, Scott Co., Minnesota. She and husband Charles Charley Schwartz, also from Germany, raised 11 children.

Margaretha's maiden name is also seen as Ausbach.
