Frank Dewey Smith, of 340 East Baker St. Bloomington, Ill., a former resident of Mt. Pulaski, died at 2:39 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, 1951, in the Illinois Central Hospital Cook Co. in Chicago. He had been a surgery patient for 11 days. Mr. Smith had been in failing health for several months. He was aged 53 years, 6 months, 14 days.
Frank was born Jan. 17, 1898, in Wilson, Louisiana, a son of Drury McVea Smith and Neoma Augusta Palmer Smith, (buried in Magnolia Cemetery in Meridian, Mississippi).
In early manhood he secured employment with the Illinois Central Railroad. Coming to Mt. Pulaski for signal maintenance work for the company, he married Mary Lucile Anderson (b. Oct. 31, 1900; d. 1990 and buried beside him) on Oct. 8, 1919. After leaving here the family located in Marine and in 1941, moved to Bloomington where he continued his signal work. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Signal Association.
Surviving family include, his wife, Mary, three sons, Frank Wayne Smith (b.6-9-1920 and d.3-24-1974) of Portland, Oregon; Harris Gordon Smith (b. Oct. 26, 1921 and d. 2000, married Aug. 31, 1952 to wife Donna) of Ipswitch, Massachusetts and James Richard "Dick" Smith(b.11-6-1927) of Bloomington, Illinois; only one grandchild; an older sister, Mrs. Naomi Eugenia Smith Maulding of Jackson, Mississippi(Findagrave #6748 2450) and one brother, Drew M. Smith, Jr. of Atlanta, Georgia.
The remains were removed from the hospital in Chicago to the Schahl Funeral Home in Mt. Pulaski, early Thursday morning. Funeral services were held at the funeral home at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, August 4, conducted by Rev. Robert Wilkes, pastor of the Christian church. Paul R. Moore sang one hymn, "Beyond the Sunset", accompanied by Mrs. J.H. Stuart. Among the many attending the services were railroad men from Clinton and Bloomington.
Burial was in Mount Pulaski Cemetery. Pallbearers were J.H. Stuart, Charles Schultz, Frank Conant of Mt. Pulaski; E.O. Clark, H.D. Gawthorp and R.H. Harris of Clinton, Ill.
