Inscription
“In Memory of Sarah Ladd, the amiable consort of William Ladd and daughter of Benoni Gardner, Esq. late of Newport, R.I. She died at Alexandria, 30 Oct 1807, in the 74th year of her age. Exemplary and endearing in all the relations of life, she possessed the respect and esteem of an extensive acquaintance. Her mourning children have erected this monument as a small testimony of their filial duty, reverence, and affection.”
* Her table grave marker is now gone, but there is evidence of her grave next to the boxtomb of her husband William Ladd.
** The inscription is quoted by Wesley Pippenger in volume 1 of his series “Tombstone Inscriptions of Alexandria, Virginia,” 1992, and taken from “A Collection of American Epitaphs and Inscriptions,” by Timothy Alden, 1814, vol. 5, p. 87.
