Mrs. Gertrude Cottle eighty six years old, of 911 Twenty Sixth St, died last night (24 Jul 1956) in a Huntington hospital following an illness of six months. Funeral rites will be conducted at 2:30 pm tomorrow ant the Cavendish Johnson Funeral Home. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Cottle's late husband was (Walter) Judd Cottle. She was born in Gallia Co, Ohio May 30, 1870, a daughter of the late Samuel and Frances Baker Van Horn. She was a member of the Ninth Avenue Methodist Church. Surviving are a brother, C H Van Horn of Cleveland, Ohio, and three nieces; Mrs. Ethel Cornwell and Mrs. Kathryn Monnig of Huntington and Mrs. P R Bias of Chesapeake.

Gertrude Vanhorn was born in Lawrence County, Ohio on May 31, 1870, the daughter of Samuel Robert Vanhorn and Frances Charlotte Baker. She was first married to James S Spicer on Jan 1, 1899 in Cabell County, WV. James died in 1935 in Cabell County and was buried in the Spring Hill Cemetery. (note:)We were told that from this union a daughter may have been born, Gertrude Spicer abt 1914...cannot locate James and Gertrude in 1920 and cannot verify this child. She was not mentioned as a survivor in her obituary. Still searching for any issue from this marriage.

Gertrude married second to Julian Lincoln Owens in abt 1938. He was the widower of Mary V Harrison Owens who died in 1937. Julian and Gertrude Owens are seen in the 1940 Cabell county, WV census. Julian died in 1941 in Cabell County, and is buried in the Woodmere Memorial Park with his first wife.

Gertrude Vanhorn Spicer Owens married the third time to Walter Judson Cottle on Sept 5, 1945. Walter Cottle was the widower of two former wives, Nellie Humphrey Cottle who died in 1914 and and Frances Patton Martin who died in 1941.
