Departed this life, at his residence in Monroe county, Miss., on the 2nd July inst., of Bilious Pneumonia, JOHN ABBOTT, in the 60th year of his age.
Mr. Abbott is well known throughout North Mississippi. His qualities of head and heart demand some notice. In private life, he was noted for courtesy, social feeling, and generosity. Devoted to his friends, he was self-sacrificing and obliging, always giving him pleasure to be able to serve a friend and advance his interest. Friendship was not a mere name or form - it was an all pervading sentiment of his heart, leading him to forget self, while a friend needed his assistance and support.
He was a man of good intellect, well-versed in the affairs and interest of his State, and quite efficient and competent as a business man. For his known honesty, virtue, and business capacity, he was three times elected to the Legislature by Monroe county, and discharged the duties of legislator with honor to himself and credit to his county.
The deceased had suffered many months from an indurated tumor in his left side, from which he had just recovered, over which himself and friends were rejoicing, when a slight exposure brought on another disease, which, in a few days, terminated his earthly career. A more generous and faithful heart never ceased to beat.
Being a member of that noble brotherhood, the Free Masons, he faithfully performed his duties and obligations to the craft, and when, at length he was summoned by the gavil of our Supreme Grand Master to appear in the Grand Lodge above, he met death composedly, and, no doubt, will receive the wages of eternal refreshments as a reward for his fidelity and virtue. Departed friend, peace to thy ashes, and happiness to thy noble spirit.
