Marshall Sherman was born in New Fairfield, Connecticut, to Eli and Polly (Phelps) Sherman. The family traveled from Connecticut to Fairfield, Franklin, Vermont, between 1802 and 1813. There were six males and three females in the family which included: Buel, Stanley, Marshall, William and Emeline. Eli is buried in Bradley Cemetery, Fairfield, Vermont.

According to his obituary Marshall was converted to God in 1822 and soon after received his license to preach in the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was an Elder in the church in New Hampton when he died.

Marshall, Sarah and their family arrived in Dundee Township with the Cyrus Larkin family and Moses Wanzer in 1837. They lived and farmed in Section 19.

On February 26, 1845, Marshall Sherman and twenty one other people purchased one acre of land in Section 19 from Isaac George for a "burying ground."

Soon after the 1870 census Rev. Marshall Sherman moved to New Hampton, Iowa, with his daughters Cordelia and Katherine (Sherman) McDonald. The daughters took care of him as he grew older. His remains were shipped home for a funeral at the Methodist Episcopal Church of Dundee and burial in Dundee Township Cemetery West.
