American lyricist for Broadway stage, films and tv. Her birth name was Carolyn Paula Rosenthal. She began her professional career as an advertising copywriter, typist and secretary who, in her words, "couldn't take dictation." At the urging of a musical publisher who gave her a contract, she turned to songwriting in 1951. Her Broadway debut was for "Peter Pan," starring Mary Martin, for which she contributed lyrics to the popular songs "I've Gotta Crow," "I Can Fly" and "I Won't Grow Up." She wrote lyrics for many other popular songs, including "Hey, Look Me Over," "The Best is Yet to Come," "Young at Heart," I've Got Your Number," "Real Live Girl," "Here's to Us," "It Amazes Me," "Stay With Me," "On the Other Side of the Tracks," "Witchcraft" and "How Little We Know."

She added songs to the films "The Cardinal" (1963), starring Romy Schneider, and "Father Goose," (1964), starring Cary Grant and Leslie Caron.

Her collaborators included Elmer Bernstein, Morton Gould, Betty Comden & Adolph Green, Jule Styne, Lee Pockriss and Cy Coleman.

At the time of her death of a heart attack, she was collaborating with Marvin Hamlisch on a musical
adaptation of "Smiles."

Her ashes were originally buried Jan.18, 1984 at Ferncliff in the Maplewood section. They were then moved to inside the Main Mausoleum on Aug.4, 1987. Her epitaph notes one of her best known songs, "Young At Heart."

She was divorced from David W. Cunningham, Jr., and was survived by her mother, Sylvia Gershowitz; sister, June Silver; three nieces and a nephew.
