Harold Friedlander, 91, passed away at the Willapa Harbor Care Center in Raymond, WA on September 26, 2010. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Gertrude, and is survived by his two daughters – Gail Friedlander of Raymond, and Nanette Klein of New York City.
Harold was a New Year's baby, born on January 1, 1919 and raised in the Bronx in New York City. A proud veteran, Harold enlisted in the Army during World War II and saw three years of service in the Pacific. After the war ended he met and married Gertrude, started a family, and settled into a lifelong career with the US Postal Service. Retired at the young age of 59, Harold and Gertrude started a new life in San Diego, where they spent 25 happy years until she passed on in 2001. He spent the next few years in Walnut Creek, California and Chehalis, WA before moving to Raymond in May of 2009.
Road trips were Harold's greatest joy, and he and Gertrude drove nearly every road in the Lower 48, marveling at the beauty of our land. When at home he loved baseball and music best of all, and always had a huge collection of records, later tapes, and last of all CDs that remained his treasures throughout his life. He also had an extraordinarily comprehensive knowledge of history, from the ancient world on up to current times, as well as a passionate interest in politics.
While Harold spent only the last year of his life in Raymond, he managed to get in a lifetime's worth of sparkly-eyed compliments and flirtations in at that time. He always had kind words and a cheerful greeting for the staff at both the Alder House and later at the Care Center, and was appreciated by all for his charming and courteous manners.
Harold was an enthusiastic supporter of the Harbor Association of Volunteers for Animals (HAVA), and loved kitties in particular throughout his life. In his memory Harold's family has set up the Friskie Fund, named after Harold's most beloved cat, to provide emergency medical care to the pets of HAVA's low-income clients. If you wish to make a donation to this fund in his memory, please send it to HAVA at PO Box 243, Raymond, WA 98577.
