This man was one of the most wonderful and kindest men I ever knew. I never heard him raise his voice at anybody and rarely heard him complain. He loved to sit and talk to anybody who would listen.

There are three things about him I will never forget. The first was Grandma telling me her reaction when she first saw him. He was at her house with his brother, Virgil, who was dating Grandma's sister, Mildred. When my great grandmother asked Grandma what she thought of him she said, "His ears are huge." I'm grateful none of the grandkids or great grandkids got Grandpa's ears.

The second thing I'll never forget is a weekend I spent with Grandma and Grandpa. I had been sitting in the living room looking through a large box of pictures that I would drag out every time I was there. Grandpa commented that he had pictures of every house and car he had ever owned or lived in. He went upstairs to find them and I ran into the downstairs bedroom and hid under the bed from Grandpa. He came back down a couple hours later having forgot what he had gone upstairs for. Now I wish he had remembered and I hadn't hidden. I would love to have seen the pictures.

The last thing is actually the day he died. He was sitting on the sofa with Grandma watching TV. He looked out the window and commented to Grandma, "Look at that woman walking up the sidewalk in the purple dress. Isn't she beautiful?" Grandma looked out the window and saw nobody there. She told Grandpa he was crazy and seeing things. When she didn't get a reply she looked at him and he was already gone. The family likes to think that it was his mother coming to escort him home. She had been buried in a purple dress. When grandma died a few years later, her only request was that she be buried in a purple dress.
