Member of the Tabernacle M.E. Church in Camden, 1905.

Civil War veteran, Company D, 26th Infantry. Enlisted as a private in 1862. Was discharged 27 June 1863 at Newark, New Jersey. Received a pension 2 Feb. 1901

Organized at Camp Frelinghuysen, Newark, N.J., and mustered in September 18, 1862. Left State for Washington, D.C., September 26. Camp on Capital Hill till October 1. Moved to Frederick, Md., October 1, thence to Hagerstown, Md., October 11. Attached to 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, 6th Army Corps, Army of the Potomac. At Hagerstown, Md., till October 31. Movement to Falmouth, Va., October 31-November 19. Battle of Fredericksburg, Va., December 12-15. At Falmouth, Va., till April 27, 1863. "Mud March" January 20-24. Chancellorsville Campaign April 27-May 6. Operations at Franklin's Crossing April 29-May 2. Battle of Maryes Heights, Fredericksburg, May 3. Salem Heights May 3-4. Banks' Ford May 4. Franklin's Crossing June 5-13. Reached Washington, D.C., June 17. Mustered out at Newark, N.J., June 27, 1863.
Regiment lost during service 1 Officer and 14 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 21 Enlisted men by disease. Total 36.

Listed as living in Camden, New Jersey during the 1870 Census.

Joseph and his family were living in Delaware in 1880 and are listed in the census for that State. What is confusing is why Joseph and the rest of the family claim they were born in Delaware when the official records from New Jersey say otherwise?

Listed as living in North West Fork, Sussex County, Delaware in 1880. Occupation was Engineer in saw mill. Probably working for lumber merchants Newel Ball or Alex Ball.

Family lived at 263 Sycamore, Camden, New Jersey, between the years 1887 - 1889. Listed in the 1887 city directory for Camden as an Engineer.

Family appears to be living in Philadelphia in 1890, at 3712 Sansom Street.

Listed in the 1895 NJ State Census as living in Camden.

I suspect that Joseph and his family were still living in Delaware in 1897, where his father Amos died in that year.

Listed in the 1900 census for Camden, New Jersey, living with wife Cynthia and daughters Ida and Cynthia at 536 Front Street.

In 1904/1905 Joseph and his wife Cynthia were living at 52 Erie St. Camden, New Jersey.

In 1907 Joseph was residing at 62 Erie Street, and it appears that Joseph and Cynthia were divorced at this time.

Joseph and his second wife, Melissa, are listed in the 1910 census for Camden, New Jersey. They were living at 55 Wood Street, Census Roll 872, Book 2, Ward 1, Page 81a. They had been married for two years by this census. Melissa was born in Pennsylvania of German parents. This was also her second marriage. She was born in 1856.

In 1910/1911, Joseph was living with second wife, Melissa, at 55 Wood St., Camden, New Jersey.

In the 1920 Census for Camden, New Jersey, 2nd Ward, Joseph and Melissa are living at 940 Lawrence Street.

Joseph was living at 2012 Arlington Street in 1930 census, in the household of his son Mark. Also in this household were Mark's daughter Cora Kain and her daughter Cora.

Joseph's daughter-in-law, Mary, reported his death in 1932 while Joseph was still living at 2012 Arlington.
