A longtime resident and beloved physician of Baton Rouge, Dr. Bert R. Burgoyne died at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 19, 2001, at St. James Place. He was born on Aug. 25, 1907, in Minneapolis, Minn., to William Attig and Margaret Doyle Burgoyne. As a young child, he lived with his family in Minneapolis, Lincoln, Neb., and Shreveport. He entered college at the University of Minneapolis at age 15, moving to Tulane after one year. Upon graduating from Tulane Medical School, he began medical practice as a general physician in Lake Providence. There he met and married Alice Guilfoil. They celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary this year. Upon the advent of World War II, he became a flight surgeon in the Army Air Forces, where he served from 1942 to 1945. He was stationed in Burma, where he survived many flights over the famous Burma Hump. In this theater, he also became deeply interested in the psychological effects upon U.S. service men under the stresses of battle. After the war, he returned to Lake Providence and resumed his general medical practice. After two years, he began study at the Menninger Clinic at Topeka, Kan., and upon earning a degree in psychiatry, he remained for a time on the staff of the famed clinic. In 1950, he moved with his wife and two children to Baton Rouge, where he became the city's first practicing psychiatrist. For over 40 years, he treated patients from all parts of Louisiana and beyond. Additionally, during the 1960s-1970s he served as director of the Baton Rouge Guidance Center. He closed his practice of psychiatry in the early 1990s and immediately assumed a medical position with Social Security in Baton Rouge. There he continued to work until April of this year, his 94th year.
