Philip was the son of John D. Nitterhouse (aka: Daniel Niederhauss). Philip, like his brothers Lewis and John, was a carpenter. He and his nephew, Charles Evans, built the courthouse in Chambersburg, PA. That courthouse was destroyed during the Civil War burning of Chambersburg in 1864. Philip was a director of the Poor House. He and his brother John were instrumental in the construction of the paper mill in Chambersburg, primarily in building machinery.

Philip died of pleurisy. Engraved above his name on his headstone is a small obelisk, shaped exactly like the one that marks the grave of his parents and brother Lewis. Philip was married to Elizabeth Frey. There is no headstone marking her grave.
