Edward L. Abair, 80, of Ray Street, a 49-year captain and commander for the Ludlow Special Police Force, died Friday at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. He was a first-class steamfitter at Chapman Valve Co. for 45 years and retired in 1980. He was the former owner and operator of Abair and Cairns Oil Co. in Ludlow. He was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Church.

He was a longtime precinct member at the Ludlow Town Meetings. He served on the High School and the East Street School Building Committees.

He leaves his wife of 60 years, Mary (Hojnak) Abair; a son, Robert Abair of Agawam; a daughter, Betty Blais of Ludlow; a brother, Eugene Abair of Ludlow; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be Wednesday morning in the church.

The funeral is private and at the family's convenience. The Nowak Funeral Home of Indian Orchard is in charge.
