Corpl Michael Cosgrove
1829 - 1903

Michael Cosgrove was born September 29, 1829 in Tipperary, Ireland. He migrated to America.

On February 4, 1862, Cosgrove enlisted in the Union Army in the 5th Minnesota Infantry, Company I.

He received an injury to his back and after 10 months and 20 days, on December 31, 1862, he was released from duty. In spite of his injury, Michael Cosgrove re-inlisted in Hatch's Calvary Battalian on September 1, 1863 and mustered out on June 22, 1866.

After the Civil War ended, he came to Melrose, Minnesota and he married Bridget Meagher on July 3, 1866 in Stearns County, Minnesota. The couple homesteaded on a farm in Grove Township, 1 1/2 miles south of Melrose, Minn.

The 1880 Minnesota Territory Census for Grove Township in Stearns County list one son (Cornelis) and five daughters for Michael & Bridget Cosgrove:

After the death of his wife in November 1892, he remained a widower for the next eleven years. Corpl Michael Cosgrove died on January 17, 1903, in Melrose, Minnesota - - from a fractured skull as a result of falling down the stairs, dying almost instantly. Michael Cosgrove is buried next to his wife, Bridget Meagher Cosgrove in Plot 16 of Row 11 in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Melrose, MN. Their daughter & son-in-law, Margaret & Sovelen V. Morehouse, and their grandchild, Delyle Morehouse, are all buried in Row 11 as well.
