In 1909 Bertha Kahn gave birth to her first set of twins: Al and Dave. They were very different in both appearance and temperament. Uncle Al had freckles and reddish-blond hair; Dave had dark hair and an olive complexion. Uncle Al liked the small town country life. Dave was the most urbane. Al preferred wearing bib overalls while Dave was always well-dressed.
He was remembered as the family "Cary Grant". During the 1930s Dave went into business making fur coats and provided jobs for Al, Roselle and his mother during the depression. Besides owning the fur factory, Dave owned a bowling alley. He played pool and poker so well that he was able to earn extra money from it. Years later, the Las Vegas casino owners offered him a job, and then would pay him to leave their casino and gamble elsewhere when he refused to work for them.
His elegance and sophistication made Dave very popular with the young ladies of Flemington. During World War II, he served in the Signal Corps and then served under General Eisenhower at SHAEF (Supreme Headquaters of the Allied Expeditionary Force). Working in the SHAEF office in London, Uncle Dave was one of the few men who knew about the D-Day invasion plans.
When he went to Paris with General Eisenhower for the liberation, he met Aunt Paulette. They married in Paris. Uncle Dave stayed in the military a year after the end of the war until he could get Aunt Paulette into the United States. She was pregnant with Dicky when she came to the United States on the Queen Mary so Dicky could be born here and therefore have American citizenship.
They lived in Flemington where Uncle Dave had his fur factory and bowling alley. Michele was born there, but Aunt Paulette hated the small town life after growing up in Paris, France so they moved to California in 1955.
