The three wise men from The Bible that came bearing gifts for Jesus on the night of his birth. The relics of the Three Wise Men were given to archbishop Reinald von Dassel in 1165 by Emperor Barbarossa, who had taken them from Milan as spoils of war after he conquered the city. The archbishop took them to Cologne and had a shrine built for them, most of which was crafted by Nikolaus von Verdun. The shrine became the destination of countless pilgrimages since then.
