Curtis was the pianist for the Davis Sisters gospel group which he joined in 1947 when he was 19 years old. His piano playing displayed a strong jazz, bouncy rag-time influence which many early Church-goers were slow to accept as religious music in the very early 1950s. He lived on the second floor of the Davis family home in Philadelphia where he also died from a heart attack.
