Pauline Haydon Salmon was born in 1817 in the West Indies. The names of her parents were never recorded. She is the oldest individual on record interred at Father Dickson Cemetery.

Although the importation of slaves was banned by Congress in 1808, it was not well enforced until after 1820. As a result, between the years 1801-1820, the number of slaves brought to America was the highest it had ever been. After the ban, children of slaves kept the institution of slavery self-sustaining. Perhaps Pauline was one of these children. One of the inherent tragedies of slavery was the fact that masses of black people remain nameless in the historical records.

At some time in her 109 years, Pauline was brought into the United States. Eventually, St. Louis, Missouri became her home, where she married and had at least two children.
