Margaret was the granddaughter of a United Empire Loyalist, the daughter of & Christiana Flinn Bradshaw, she married Marcus C. Crombie on January 16, 1832 in Montreal, Quebec.

Having already been married, Marcus brought 4 daughters to the marriage. Margaret & Marcus would go on to have nine sons, eight of who would live to adulthood and were sponsored by the older daughters, all of whom were educated and taught in schools long before women were expected to work.

Upon Marcus' death in 1852, Margaret returned to work. Their youngest child, David, was still a baby at the time. Between the oldest girls and the youngest, there was a span of nearly 30 years between the children born to Marcus Crombie.

Margaret had been a teacher prior to her marriage. She had taught in Picton prior to their arrival in Toronto. She established a Primary School in Toronto following her return to teaching.
