Minnesota muster roll = Co. B., 5th Minn. Inf. Enlisted 1862 at Chatfield, Fillmore Co., Minn. Born 1838 in Ireland. Died near Messenger's Ford, Black River, Miss.

John Brennan, second son of Thomas and Bridget (Dwyer) Brennan, was born 13 Aug 1838 in Knockadeen, Townland of Castlewarren, Ireland. He came to the United States with his family in 1852. The family remained in Watertown, NY, until 1855 when they moved to farm in Chatfield township, Fillmore county, MN.

On March 15, 1862, John enlisted in the Army of the United States (Union), and was assigned to Company B, Fifth Regiment, Minnesota Infantry Volunteers. During the Civil War he was in several Indian skirmishes in central Minnesota, before participating in the Tennessee campaigns and Battle of Vicksburg. He died August 18, 1863 of dysentery in the Regimental Hospital, Camp Sherman, Mississippi. John Brennan is buried in Vicksburg National Cemetery, Vicksburg National Military Park, Vicksburg, Mississippi.
