Smoot, 75, who helped establish the Osteopathic College of Oklahoma State University in Tulsa, died Sunday at his home. He donated his body to the school.

A native of Enid, he graduated from Enid High School in 1931 and received a B.A. degree from Phillips University. He graduated from the Kansas City College of Osteopathic Medicine and did his internship and residency at Lakeside Hospital in Kansas City.

In 1943, Smoot opened his Tulsa practice. He performed the first surgery in Oklahoma Osteopathic Hospital, now Tulsa Regional Medical Center, where he was chief of staff in 1962 and 1963. Smoot was the emeritus senior member of the Department of Surgery.

He was a 45-year member of the Downtown Optimist Club and recently received the state "Optimist of the Year" Award.

Other memberships included Oaks Country Club, Wheeling Avenue Christian Church and later First Christian, where he was an elder. He was also a founder of the Oklahoma Christian Home in Edmond and a member of the executive committee of the Tulsa Council of Churches.

He is survived by his wife, Kathryn; four daughters, Susan S. Staudt and Sammye Eng, both of Tulsa, Paula S. Ogg, of Minneapolis, and Ashley Sherinian, of Phoenix, Ariz.; a sister, Maxine Semones Miller, of Tulsa; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Christian Church for Joe Ashley Smoot, a Tulsa osteopathic physician and surgeon for nearly 50 years.

Contributions can be made to the Osteopathic Education Foundation at 4848 N. Lincoln Blvd., Oklahoma City.
