Peter was the third oldest out of seven. Grew up on the family farm in Amwell township, later known as Raritan township.
Peter learned the trade of wheelwright from his father and became a carriage maker. His older son, Theodore, was associated with working in this trade, as a painter. His younger son Elias, became a wagon maker in a blacksmith shop.
