Funeral services for George W. Cornwell, 61, of Coleman drive, Calhoun, were held Saturday at 3 p.m. at New Zion Baptist Church with the Revs. Leroy Whitfield, Ray Bearden and Weldon Scoggins officiating. Music was arranged by the New Zion Trio. Burial was in Damascus Cemetery.

Mr. Cornwell died in the Gordon County Hospital Thursday, Sept. 19, following several years of declining health. Born in Murphy, NC, on Feb. 2, 1902, he was the son of the late John T. and Nallie Palmer Cornwell. He had lived in Gordon County since 1937. He was an employee of the county for 18 years before ill health caused his retirement. Mr. Cornwell was a deacon of New Zion Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, the former Mabelle Higdon; two sons, Franklin and Henry Cornwell of Calhoun; five daughters, Mrs. J. E. Glass, Mrs. Tommy Glass, Miss Aubrey Mae Cornwell and Miss Lanette Cornwell, all of Calhoun, and Mrs. W. R. Dunaway, Rome; three brothers, C. A. Cornwell of Calhoun, Frank Cornwell, Dalton, and Willard Cornwell, Cleveland, Tenn.; two sisters, Mrs. Virgil Patterson, Blue Ridge and Mrs. Fields Chapman, Cherry Log; 13 grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers included New Zion Baptist deacons: Clyde Herndon, J. B. Williams, D. J. Smith, M. D. Casey, Hubert Greeson and Julius Couch.
