He was born on May 18, 1939 in Gordon County, son of the late Walter and Maybelle Highdon Cornwell. He was employed for 20 years as a maintenance supervisor for Quality Finishers and before retirement due to ill health was employed by Brentlin Colormasters in the Maintenance Department. he was a member of Sugar Valley Lodge No. 733 F & AM where he had served as Worshipful Master and was awarded the 25 Year Pin in February 2000. On April 28, 1987, he was named Mason of the Year. He was an honorary member of Floyd Springs Lodge No. 167 F & AM. He was also a member of the Grand Chapter Royal Arch Masons and the Gordon County Low Twelve Club.
Survivors include his wife, the former Evelyn Cudd, to whom he was married for 38 years; a son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Vee Cornwell of Dalton; a granddaughter, Chrissy Cornwel; two step grandchildren, Dawn and Jessica Faulkner; a stepgreat-grandson, Ben Lyons; sisters and brothers-in-law, Lucy and the Rev. J. E. Glass, Helen Dunaway, Thelma and John Calloway, and Lanette Busby; a brother, George Cornwell; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral was Monday, April 10 at 4 p.m. at the Bradley Anderson Memorial Chapel of Max Brannon & Sons Funeral Home, with Pete Hight, Alvin Hale, and Glenn Balliew officiating. Pallbearers were Tom Davis, Glenn Bass, Lynn Phipps, Terry German, Glenn Balliew, Greg Stamey, and William Mathis. Honorary escort included members of Sugar Valley Lodge No. 733 F & AM. Singing was arranged by the Hendrix Family. Intermen was in Fain Cemetery, with Sugar Valley Lodge No. 733 F & AM in charge of Masonic graveside service.
