The 1694 gravestone of Thomas Johnson, who was born c.1630, is one of the few dating from the 1600's to be seen in Mt. Pleasant, and along with his wife Ellena's, shares the distinction of the oldest in the cemetery. Very few gravestones from the 1600's still exist in New Jersey, as most of the state's original city churchyards have been lost to urban development. Mr. Johnson's stele is not in its original location, having been moved (along with his remains) from 1st Presbyterian Churchyard in downtown Newark during the 1880's.
The city's earliest records note that he was named 1st Constable of Newark in January 1669, and a Thomas Johnson is also reported to have made his home a hotel in 1670. He died at age 64, is buried beside his 61-year-old wife Ellena (aka Eleonor), who had predeceased him just 3 days earlier. The couple and their children were among the first settlers of Newark, NJ, who had come to the colony from Connecticut.
