Social Reformer. She devoted all her life to the fight against cancer and founded the "Deutsche Krebshilfe" (German Cancer Help Association) in 1974. In 1969 she married Walter Scheel, the then minister for foreign affairs and later president of the German Federal Republic. Ironically, the cause of her death was cancer. She kept her illness secret from everybody but the closest family.
