He was listed as "Adopted Son" in the 1920 US Census, with a birth place of New York. His death certificate says that he died of meningitis, and was born in New York City with parents listed unknown. It was common in the early 1900's that New York had so many orphans, they sent "orphan trains" out west, some to the midwest, some to the southwest, etc, and people who had a hard time conceiving children to help on their farms would adopt children who then worked on their farms. Michael Oswald and Elizabeth (Wilhelm) Oswald adopted two boys, Gerald and Adrian, both of whom were older than their first-surviving children, and listed as working on the family farm in the 1920 census.
