In 1859 Lafayette Hewitt was appointed a position in the U.S. post office at Washington DC, but resigned this commission after Lincoln's election as president of the U.S. He joined the Confederacy in 1861 as assistant adjutant, with the rank of captain. In 1863 he was appointed to serve on the staff of Gen. John C. Breckinridge and later to the staff of Gen. Ben Hardin of the First Kentucky Brigade. He served with the brigade until the close of the war.
In 1865 he returned to Kentucky and began a law practice. In 1867 he was commission by Ky. Gov. Stevenson to serve as guartermaster-general of Kentucky. He was elected state auditor in 1879, serving for 10 years. He died in Frankfort and was buried in his hometown of Elizabethtown.
Hewitt was also active in various Confederate Veteran activties. The Sons of Confederate Camp in Frankfort was named in his honor. The Gen. Ben Hardin Helm Camp, SCV erected a Confederate marker at his grave in 1994.
