According to his death certificate, he was born in York County, Pennsylvania, while his military records claim Germany. Wherever he entered the world, he was the son of Joseph & Elizabeth Lauer and in 1860 was a cooper living in Spring Garden Township, York County. He stood 6' 0" tall and had dark hair and hazel eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in York March 31, 1864, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg May 7 as a private with Co. H, 187th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 3, 1865.

He married Lucy Ann Bulk December 21, 1865, and fathered Charles Henry B. (b. 1870). In 1890, he lived in York Borough, York County, but died in Sunbury, Northumberland County, from "arteriosclerosis [and] interstitial nephritis."
