Alabama (Hardy) Meriwether
Lowndes Signal (Fort Deposit, Alabama)
1929 (died 28 December 1928)

When Mrs. Alabama Meriwether passed to the better land, and promoted to the higher life on December 28th (1928), the most frequent comment was, "She was a remarkable woman." Truly she was remarkable in many ways. In her dauntless spirit, her bright mind, her love of life. Left a widow with three small children, and improvised by the war, she bravely faced life and unaided conquered rearing and educating those children with the best, then not such an easy task as it is today. Nor did she bury herself in this caring for her children, but she found time for her church and her friends. She was interested in others and this interest never waned, although she had almost reached a score more than the allotted years of man's sojourns upon earth. To the last she took a keen interest in life and could talk well upon current events of varied natures. She was not a negative character, a human cipher. She had positive convictions and spoke them freely when occasion called for them; but with tact and wisdom. To those who knew Mrs. Meriwether any attempt to enumerate her qualities will be as needless, as inadequate; she was a whole souled, sound minded, tender and sympathetic. Most of the friends of her youth have gone on before, and her noble boy preceded her by only two short weeks, so while we extend to the bereaved family our sincere sympathy let us all picture the bright smile, the glad hand clasp, the eternal joy of her reunion with her loved ones and friends. While we personally feel poorer by the going of this friend, let us strive to remember that our friends are gradually gathering in the other land, and are preparing a great welcome for us if one we be counted worthy to join them when our work on earth is done.
