Joseph was born South Carolina (likely in Charleston), the son of Irish immigrant Samuel Hagins and Martha McMeen. Joseph married his first wife, Elizabeth Wellman, in about 1824; she died in 1828 in Shelby County, Kentucky.
Approximately nine years later, in about 1835, Joseph married Amelia Long and the 1860 census for Simpsonville, Kentucky, finds him farming at age 62. In the same household are the following:
Wife, Amelia, age 42; son Alexander, 19, an Apprentice Carpenter; daughter Eliza A 16; son Samuel 9; Alice who was 1 (which was correct for the date of the census), and his mother-in-law, Anna Long, age 69.
All except Joseph are listed as having been born in Kentucky, and the household was quite prosperous by the day's standards. Joseph lists the value of his land at $11,000 with another $12,000 in personal assets; Anna Long held no real estate but had personal assets valued at $6,000.
Alice's marker reads "Alice, daut of J.R. and A.E. Hagins" and gives the dates of her birth and death.
