Virginia Akerly Bannister

Virginia Akerly Bannister, age 87, of Erie died Sunday, November 7, 2010 at Forestview Healthcare of Springhill Senior Living Center. Born in Erie on October 5, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Frederick and Ethel Bartlett Akerly, and graduated from Harborcreek High School, Class of 1941.

Virginia had worked at Bliley Electric during World War II. A successful entrepreneur by nature, she owned and operated Dietary Foods for 20 years and was very well respected as a nutritional consultant. She also, along with her late husband, had owned and operated Virginia's Beach Campground on the Lake in North Springfield, Pa.

She was past Secretary of the Zonta Club of Erie and a member of Asbury United Methodist Church.

Virginia loved baseball, bowling, fishing, and roses. But, first and foremost was the love that she felt for her family; their fondest memories are of wonderful Sunday dinners and her apple pie.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Richard George Bannister in 2001; two sisters, Hazel Hinkler, and Shirley Weindorf; and four brothers, Leslie, Marvin, Wallace, and Gerald Akerly.

Virginia is survived by three sons, Douglas Bannister, of Oklahoma City, Okla.; Dr. Curtis Bannister and his wife, Stephanie, of Erie and children Olivia, Basil, and Fina Bannister; Bryan Bannister and his wife Sheryl, of Edinboro and children Charlie and Allan Meeker, and Andrew Bannister; and her daughter, Susan Oglevee and her husband Robert, of Erie and children Erin Pawek, Kimberly Day, and Casey Bowes.

She is further survived by two brothers, Robert and Leon Akerly and his wife Rhea; and a sister-in-law, Gladys Bannister; three brothers-in-law, Robert Bannister and his wife Bea, Raymond Hinkler, and Charles Weindorf; and seven great-grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Burton Funeral Home Thursday from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and are invited to services at Asbury United Methodist Church, 4703 West Ridge Road, on Friday at 11 a.m. with the Reverend Dan Owen officiating.

Burial will be in Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery.
