Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. A veteran of the the Mexican War, he served in the Civil War first as a Captain in the 24th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, then as Lieutenant Colonel of the 18th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, then finally as Colonel and commander of the 74th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services during the war". After the end of the conflict he became a prominent lawyer and judge, and served as a Iowa State Supreme Court Justice from 1889 to 1902. His older brother was Brevet Brigadier General William Given of the 102nd Ohio Infantry.
