Mary Craig Shartzer, the daughter of Spencer Craig and Ann Harrell, was born on December 17, 1846 in Kentucky. She was the wife of James Shartzer the son of Andrew Shartzer and Emaline Webster of Virginia. He was born on May 9, 1839 in Virginia.

At the time of the 1880 Census of Short Creek, Grayson County, Kentucky the James Shartzer family consisted of: James, a farmer, age 40, born in VA with parents born in VA; his wife Mary, a house keeper, age 33, and children: Henry F., age 17; Chas. S., age 15; Wm. A., age 13; James M., age 11; Sarah P., age 8; Naoma J., age 6; John W., age 3; and Robert F., age 1. Henry Charles, William and James were listed as farm laborers. The children were shown with their father born in Virginia and their mother born in Kentucky.

James Shartzer died on December 26, 1921. He was buried in the Duff Churchyard Cemetery in Duff, Grayson County, Kentucky. His widow Mary joined him there after her death on May 21, 1928. Their sons William and Otto are also buried there. Otto Shartzer was born in January 11, 1883. He died on July 19, 1938.
