Gladys was the second child of Hiel David and Nellie Hendershot Williams and was born at Belpre, Ohio. Gladys's 3rd great-grandmother, a noted historical figure in the Revolutionary War era, was Mary Bird Lake. Gladys married Lloyd Nathan Thornton at Marietta on 10 Nov 1922. Gladys was a teacher, and had an avid interest in family history. She provided extensive notes and data about the Williams and Thornton families to her nephew, nieces, and granddaughters, and instilled in them a continuing interest in genealogy. At the time of her death she was 87 years, 4 months and 17 days of age, and had one daughter and 3 grandchildren.
