Sin Iness' fame and records in the event would soon be surpassed by countryman Al Oerter, who would go on to win four consecutive Olympic gold medals in the discus between 1956 and 1964. Sim Iness was a classmate and long-time friend of two-time Olympic decathlon champion Bob Mathias. Iness died of a heart attack at age 65 in 1996.
