MRS. ERIC COWARD
by Mrs. W.B. Harrill
Mrs. Maud Zachary Coward was born March 17, 1880, and died Tuesday, December 15, 1959, being 79 years old at the time of her death.
She was the daughter of the late Kit Zachary and Mary Coward Zachary.
She and Eric Coward were married January 18, 1911. They lived at the old home place until 12 years ago when they built a home in Cullowhee and moved into it. But they kept the old home as it had always been so that members of their families could always go back to it for special occasions and find home as they remembered it and where great-nieces and nephews, as well as nieces and nephews, would go on Christmas Eve to hand their stockings for Santa Claus.
She is survived by her husband, Eric Coward, one sister, Mrs. Woody Hooper of Cullowhee, and many nieces and nephews.
Early in life she joined Cowarts Methodist Church, and consistently lived a faithful and loyal Christian life. To know her was to love her. And her many acts of generosity and loving kindness to others will live forever in their lives.
Out-of-town friends and relatives attending the funeral included the following nieces and nephews: Conrad Hooper, Raleigh; Davis Hooper, Newport News, Virginia; Wayne Hooper, Carrolton, Virginia; Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Hooper, Mrs. Mable Hooper and children, Mary, Frank and Huey, Pickens, South Carolina; A.N. Kit Hooper, Cecil Field, Jacksonville, Florida.
Ray Hooper, Brevard; Burch Brown and family, Brevard; Mr. and Mrs. Chris Brown, Canton; Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Caldwell, Hazelwood; Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Coward, Philadelphia; Mr. and Mrs. Carl Coward and family, Hazelwood; Mr. and Mrs. Parey Cope, Waynesville.
Mr. and Mrs. Carl Wilson and family, Fred Coward and family, and Mrs. Orlando Coward, Canton; Mrs. J.B. Arrington, Asheville; Mrs. M.R. Coward, Norton; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Ensley, Waynesville; Mrs. Grace Cole and son, Harry, and Mrs. Carrie Wachob, Pickens, South Carolina.
