John grew up on the family farm in Washington Twp. In 1850 he drove a lot of cattle overland all the way to market in Baltimore, Maryland, the round trip taking nearly four months. He was engaged in farming his entire adult life. He was a leading member of the Evangelical Association and had served as a trustee and steward in his church.
