John was the son of Abraham Snyder and his 3rd wife Catherine Miller. He married Amanda Ann McMillan in 1854. They were the parents of nine children: John William, Elizabeth Jane, James M, Robert, Newton L, Oliver, Mary Etta, Edward and Randolph.
