Dick graduated from Salida High School in 1960. He then joined the US Army where he served in the Vietnam War. He was a Private First Class. His assignment was to the mechanized division as a mechanic and truck driver. After returning from the war, he became a long-haul trucker. He was employed by Hydrowest Electric power plant in Ouray for 17 years prior to his death. He assisted the search and rescue team.

A memorial service was held at his mother, Florence's, home Sept. 11, 2009, at 1:30 p.m., in Salida, Colorado. The Mesa County Combined Honor Guard provided Veterans honors at the graveside services held at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado, September 25, 2009 at 10:00 a.m.
